Poster Technology & Innovation in NCD Control

Description

Background:
Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) account for over 39% of deaths in Kenya, yet access to early screening remains limited, particularly in low-resource and remote settings. Barriers such as cost, travel time, and lack of screening facilities hinder timely risk detection and intervention. Afyalytics is a digital health platform designed to empower individuals to self-assess their exposure to NCD risk factors through lifestyle-based questionnaires.

Methodology:
Afyalytics employs an interactive, evidence-based questionnaire adapted from WHO and regional NCD risk factor frameworks, covering diet, physical activity, alcohol and tobacco use, medical history, and other lifestyle determinants. Upon completion, users receive an instant NCD Risk Report and personalized recommendations for risk reduction. The platform is accessible via smartphone, tablet, or computer, making it usable anytime, anywhere. Initial pilot testing has been conducted with 621 participants in Kenya to evaluate usability, accessibility, and preliminary impact.

Results:
Preliminary analysis showed that 78.2% of participants were at moderate to high risk for at least one major NCD risk factor. Key exposures identified included inadequate physical activity (64%), high processed food consumption (58.6%), and harmful alcohol use (27.1%). Users reported high satisfaction (81.6%) with the platform’s ease of use and clarity of recommendations. 79.8% of the participants indicated they would share their reports with healthcare providers, demonstrating potential to bridge community self-screening with clinical care pathways.

Conclusion:
Afyalytics demonstrates the potential of digital innovations to address gaps in NCD risk detection and prevention in Kenya by offering accessible, low-cost, and user-friendly self-assessment tools. Its personalized approach empowers individuals to take proactive steps toward healthier lifestyles, while generating population-level data that can inform policy and targeted interventions.
